THE FUTURE IS FEMALE SO MARCH FOR WOMEN

Every year on the 8th of March the world celebrates International Women’s Day, a day set aside aimed to help nations eliminate discrimination against women. Today roughly 50% of the world population identify as women and this holiday originated from the socialist and labor movements in the early 20th century. Things were made official when the he United Nations (UN) recognised the day and started celebrating it. The theme this year is “I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights” and rallies were held across the globe spotlighting issues facing women globally.

This year, rallies in Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan were met with violence while marchers in Chile, Kyrgyz and Turkey were confronted by police. The COVID-19 outbreak forced cancellations of many other rallies while others boldly marched, defying fears of the epidemic.  While it is clear from these rallies that we still face a number of issues with regard to women right, it is important to note how far we have come. Google’s doodle for International Women’s Day celebrated the achievements of women of all geographic and generational backgrounds. Singling out a few women and their milestones or achievements towards reducing inequality would be an impossible task because there are so many women who’s roles are just as important as any other woman fighting for women rights.

With that being said we continue to march, despite the fact that no no country has achieved gender equality, forward ever backward never. This month of March is for women and we march forward because today women can vote, we march forward because of Rosa Parks and her arrest, we march forward for equal pay, we march forward for political inclusion, we march forward because we are women who have come a long was from all the discrimination against us at work and at home but we are no where close to where we should be.
